I spent the next day buried in the archives. I told myself--and Charlotte--that I had been slacking on my schoolwork and needed to get some research done, but I knew in my heart that that wasn’t why I was there, not entirely. I pulled out stacks of books, books I had read and reread already for my thesis, but this time, when I opened them, it was with new eyes. Where I had seen a mass of nameless, oppressed omegas, I now saw Rose, Margaret. Alphas were supposed to be brutish, but Jack was an alpha, was he not? He had stopped when I asked him to, twice. I blushed, mortified first by my prudishness, then by my eagerness as I felt my body respond to the mere thought of Jack, of the two of us in his bedroom, his length thick and ready against my needy core.

I flipped pages until my eyes caught on a page about the advent of scent blockers. These products were manufactured to mask the scents of alphas and omegas, protecting them from unwanted attention, the text read. What about wanted attention, though, I thought for the first time. Jack had known what I’d been thinking and met me there, as I fantasized about him in the car. Margaret had known I was feeling uncomfortable and anxious, and changed the topic of conversation at dinner. Rose had checked in on me after Jack and I had disappeared to his room, but had known not to press. Having your emotions on display was dangerous--it made you vulnerable, whether omega or alpha. But what about having your emotions always suppressed, hidden under the surface? Could that not be dangerous, too?

I flipped to a section on suppressants and began to read.
